Zhanjiang Fishing Festival ushers in a bountiful new fishing season

The 2024 Zhanjiang Fishing Festival officially kicked off on August 16th, marking the end of the three-and-a-half-month fishing moratorium over the South China Sea. Held at the Zhaoshang Cruise Dock, the event celebrated the resumption of fishing activities, a time-honored tradition deeply rooted in the local culture of Zhanjiang.

The festival commenced with a grand ceremony that drew the participation of local fishermen and residents. Hundreds of fishing boats set sail into the deep sea, signaling the start of a new fishing season and the anticipation of a bountiful harvest. This momentous occasion was accompanied by various cultural activities, including a souvenir market and a seafood e-commerce fair, showcasing Zhanjiang's rich marine culture and its status as China's seafood gourmet capital.

Wang Zhide, President of the Zhanjiang Oyster Industry Association, expressed the collective excitement of the local fishing community. "We have been looking forward to this for a long time," he said. "The fishing festival has finally begun, and soon the fishing boats will head out. We are excited to bring plenty of fresh seafood to our shops, allowing consumers to enjoy more delicious seafood."

Zhanjiang boasts a coastline of 2,043 kilometers and over 140 islands, making it Guangdong Province's city with the longest coastline and the most islands. The annual fishing festival is not just a celebration of the resumption of fishing but also a significant cultural event that attracts both domestic and international tourists. "This fishing festival is one of the most distinctive brand events of Zhanjiang," noted Lin Hongqian, a local official. "It greatly boosts local consumption, especially in seafood."

While being immersed in the festive vibes, local residents told us more about the essence of the fishing festival. "There is a time when fishermen aren't allowed to go fishing to give young fish a chance to grow and maintain ecological balance," said one resident. The controlled fishing period is crucial for ensuring the long-term health of marine ecosystems and the sustainability of the fishing industry.

The Zhanjiang Fishing Festival not only celebrates the start of a new fishing season but also reinforces the city's commitment to balancing marine economy development with ecological protection, ensuring that this cherished tradition continues for generations to come.
