Greater Bay Area shines with its tech advantages in Chinese modernization

The 2023 Understanding China Conference (UCC) took place in Guangzhou from December 1 to 3. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the conference, which brought together representatives from around the world to shed light on Chinese modernization and global issues.

"The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) is really important from a strategic perspective of China's economy because it integrates economic structures which contain economies of scale," David Ferguson, Honorary Chief English Editor of Foreign Languages Press, told GDToday.

"The GBA, with its strength of integration, has developed leading companies including Huawei, Tencent, and BYD and has become the center of technology," said Zafar Uddin Mahmood, Former Special Envoy for the China Pakistan Economic Corridor.

He said although the GBA has developed leading enterprises in EV and telecommunication, new strategies should be implemented for future development. "In the context of global competition, GBA enterprises should focus on new markets with more than 180 China's trade partners," he added.

"To attract young talents, GBA should involve well-known tech figures to invest in the area," Martin Jacques, Visiting Professor of Tsinghua University, suggested. In his view, global talents may find Chinese culture attractive, even though the Chinese language is difficult. "The GBA could be one of the global centers, and it is no longer a dream," he said.
