The much-anticipated 2024 Dongguan Marathon officially kicked off at 7:30 AM on December 22, with over 20,000 runners from around the globe converging at the Dongguan Citizen Service Center. This event marks the city's return to hosting large-scale marathon races after a five-year hiatus.

Following the 2016 Dongguan Songshan Lake International Marathon and the 2017 and 2019 Asian Marathon Championships, this year's marathon is a significant milestone for the city. The event is organized under the guidance of the Guangdong Provincial Athletics Association and hosted by the Dongguan municipal government, with support from various local agencies, including the Dongguan Cultural, Radio, Television, Tourism and Sports Bureau, and the Songshan Lake Administrative Committee.

The marathon features a total of 22,000 participants across three categories: a full marathon with 6,000 runners, a half marathon with 8,000, and a fun run also with 8,000 participants.
This year's course has been significantly enhanced, connecting numerous cultural and landmark sites throughout Dongguan. Runners in both the full and half marathons will start at the Citizen Service Center, traversing Dongguan Avenue, Bayi Road, and Songshan Lake Avenue, ultimately finishing at the Dongguan Basketball Center. Participants will experience the vibrant pulse of the city center while enjoying the scenic beauty and technological ambiance of Songshan Lake and Liaobu Town.

In a nod to community spirit, this year's marathon features 16 "cross-industry" running teams, honoring those who relentlessly pursue their goals in life. Representatives from various sectors, including those who have previously worked in Dongguan, are returning to run together with the city. Local toy companies are also showcasing their unique brands and cultural identities, highlighting Dongguan's reputation as the "Capital of Chinese Trendy Toys."
In addition to the marathon, Dongguan is hosting a series of cultural activities, including intangible cultural heritage exhibitions and a cultural energy station, enhancing the festive atmosphere. Runners can indulge in local culture, delicious food, and stunning sights, fully experiencing the charm of Dongguan as they run.
