On the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, comes a traditional Chinese festival: the Double Ninth Festival. In folklore, "nine" is the largest number, and is pronounced the same in Chinese as the word signifying "forever". Therefore, this number gains the meaning of "living a long life". In 1989, the Chinese government designated the Double Ninth Festival as Seniors' Day, encouraging people to respect, take good care of and love the seniors around the country. In ancient times, there was a custom of climbing mountains to seek blessings on the Double Ninth Festival, which has been carried on until today.
