For Patience Ratidzo, this Chinese New Year is more than just a festive celebration, it's the beginning of an exciting chapter in her life. As the first-ever international graduate student admitted by Dongguan's medical system, Patience, a Zimbabwean medical student, is embarking on a three-year journey under the mentorship of Dr. Guo Suxia, Director of Cardiovascular Medicine at Dongguan People's Hospital.
Spending her first Chinese New Year in Dongguan, Patience has dived into the local festivities and traditions that make this city a cultural gem. Invited by friends to explore the city's vibrant festivities, she found herself captivated by the sea of red lanterns, intricate couplets adorning storefronts, and the bustling flower markets. "The atmosphere here is so lively and welcoming," she said with a smile.
Her journey began at Dongguan Sign, a restored cultural zone that perfectly marries the old and new. Wandering through its streets, she marveled at the preserved arcades, the playful reinterpretation of traditional culture through modern toys, and the stories of Dongguan's past brought to life in its museums. "Through visiting museums and the zone, I've learned so much about the city's history and culture. Dongguan is a place worth visiting, and I'd love to invite anyone interested to come and experience it for themselves!"
With her friend as a guide, Patience immersed herself in Hengli Town. Patience embraced the rich heritage of Dongguan's intangible cultural traditions by learning to weave a grass dragon, a craft that symbolizes prosperity and good fortune. "A dragon made of grass? I had never seen anything like it!" she exclaimed.
From learning the intricate art of crafting Hengli grass dragons to savoring local delicacies like roasted goose and freshly brewed coffee, every moment was a delightful discovery. "The food here is incredible," Patience exclaimed. "I've lived in China for some time, but this is the first time I've tasted flavors like these. They're truly unforgettable!"
Beyond the festivities, Patience's immersion in Dongguan's culture has deepened her appreciation for the city. She spoke warmly of its people's friendliness, the seamless blend of tradition and modernity, and the community spirit that defines the New Year celebrations.
