On September 8, six influencers from the Caribbean—representing Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Grenada, Guyana, Suriname, and the Bahamas—arrived in Dongguan to experience the city's international image as a hub of cultural heritage, innovation, and openness. The group visited various key locations, immersing themselves in Dongguan's rich history and modern advancements.
A deep dive into Dongguan's cultural heritage
Dongguan's cultural heritage is rich and varied, with traditions that date back hundreds of years. From the calming art of incense-making to the vibrant energy of drumming, the guests were deeply attracted by Dongguan's rich culture.
The day began at the Dongguan Culture Center, where the influencers were introduced to several national intangible cultural heritage items like the Thousand-Angle Lantern, the Guanxiang incense (agarwood), and the Mo's Martial Arts. They didn't just observe—they engaged. From experiencing agarwood in the incense workshop to learning the intricate craftsmanship behind the lion dance figures, these cultural treasures were brought to life.
One of the unique highlights is Guanxiang (Agarwood), an ancient, valuable incense that has been cultivated in the region for centuries. Dongguan is known as the "Hometown of Agarwood," with its deep-rooted history in traditional incense culture. Grenadian comedy video creator Omari Peters humorously documented his experience learning Dongguan incense culture. "I thought incense was just about lighting it up," he joked, "but it's actually a complex ritual with deep cultural meaning. This experience opened my eyes to Dongguan's profound traditions." His genuine curiosity and humor struck a chord with his followers, creating a bridge between Caribbean and Chinese cultures.
Joshua Regrello, a steelpan master from Trinidad and Tobago, had the chance to experience the provincial intangible cultural heritage of the Xinchang Drum during his visit. The powerful and resonant sound of the drums captivated him instantly. Enthusiastic and energized, he exclaimed, "I could drum here for a whole day! Every drum calls to me, every single one has its own unique tone, and the sound is just incredible!" When he learned that it takes five years to craft a Xinchang Drum, he was awestruck. His eyes remained fixed on the drums, unable to look away, clearly entranced by their craftsmanship.
He later showcased his own talents by playing his steelpan, performing both music from his home country and the famous Chinese Chinese folk tune "Jasmine Flower," sparking lively interaction with the onlookers. He marveled at the cultural significance shared by both instruments, saying, "While the materials and techniques differ, both the steelpan and Xinchang Drum carry deep cultural roots. They are true treasures of their respective cultures."
Art toys and modern creativity
If culture is the foundation of Dongguan's identity, then creativity and technological innovation are what truly enhances its vibrancy. In recent years, Dongguan has garnered widespread attention for its smart manufacturing, basketball culture, and trendy toys, making it a dynamic city with something for everyone.
At Piececool, the influencers were introduced to Dongguan's vibrant art toy scene. As the "Capital of Art Toys in China", Dongguan's art toy culture is a perfect blend of tradition and innovation, and Piececool has a series of striking products that bring China's rich heritage to life. Their "Ten Miles of Wedding" series captures the grandeur of ancient Chinese wedding processions, while the "Tang Dynasty Street" collection evokes the splendor of the Tang era. The detailed, highly intricate assembly of the toys immediately drew their admiration.
The Thousand-Angle Lantern 3D puzzle, developed in collaboration with Dongguan's official cultural organizations, showcases the city's traditional craftsmanship in an exciting, modern format. It allows players to engage with the assembly process, gaining a deeper appreciation for the cultural significance and historical value of Dongguan's heritage. Influencer Zanaba Hudson was captivated by the toys, frequently expressing her amazement. She also tried her hand at assembling one, noting that it was an excellent way to hone her hands-on skills while exploring the depth of traditional Chinese culture. "It's tough, but so creative! I love it!"
Cutting-edge technology at XbotPark
In the afternoon, the influencers headed to XbotPark, Dongguan's leading robotics industrial base, located in Songshan Lake. It showcases the city's leadership in advanced manufacturing and smart technology. As they explored the base, the group was awed by a variety of cutting-edge products, including smart home systems, automatic guitar machines "LiberLive", robot vacuums, and intelligent pet feeders and pet dryers.
Zanaba was particularly enthralled by the smart bedroom setup. "I need this entire room in my house! It's mind-blowing how far technology has come," she said with wide eyes, marveling at the seamless integration of technology into daily life. Surinamese creator Gail Eijk was drawn to the foot massager on display. As a journalist who frequently travels for work, she noted, "This would be perfect for me! It's the ideal way to unwind after a long day."
Omari Peters continued to share his enthusiasm for Dongguan's innovative spirit. "Before coming to Dongguan, I had never seen products like these," he said, impressed by the vast array of futuristic designs. "This place feels like a magical lab where every corner hides a secret of the future."
The final stop of the day was the picturesque Songshan Lake, known for its lush greenery and tranquil waters. Surrounded by nature, the influencers took a relaxing stroll through Songhu Yanyu, one of Dongguan's most celebrated scenic spots. Ashad Bain was particularly captivated by the environment, praising the park's cleanliness and design. "The air is so fresh, and the park is massive! Every city needs a park like this," he said, smiling as he soaked in the peaceful atmosphere.
Through this immersive journey, the six Caribbean guests experienced Dongguan as a city that seamlessly blends traditional heritage with modern innovation. From cultural appreciation to high-tech wonders, they left with a deeper understanding and respect for the city's vibrant identity, and excitedly shared them with their global audience.
