In 2023, an estimated 107,543 people died of drug overdoses in the United States. Since 2000, drug overdose deaths in the country have exceeded one million. The drug crisis has plagued the US for decades, showing no sign of easing.
In 1971, President Richard Nixon declared what has come to be known as the "war on drugs." Despite costing over a trillion dollars, this war has had limited effects, with cocaine availability remaining steady and overdoses skyrocketing.
