Overseas Chinese advances Zhongshan's Houshan towards urbanization and prosperity

To the east lies the Qijiang River, and to the west stands the Mashan Mountain, Houshan Community is located in the Xiqu Subdistrict of Zhongshan. As a famous overseas Chinese village, Houshan has a long tradition of valuing education and has been home to many prominent figures.

In the 1920s and 1930s, Houshan native Huang Lengguan went to Hong Kong to make a living and founded the Chung Wah Middle School. On October 1, 1949, Houshan native Huang Jian and his wife Du Lan raised the Five-starred Red Flag in their respective schools, which marked the first of such event in Hong Kong and Macao. It was a monumental and inspiring moment.

In recent years, the Houshan Community has embarked on Zhongshan's largest-scale old city renovation project. Houshan has transformed from a modest mountain village into a modern community. Its evolution mirrors the remarkable journey of Zhongshan's Reform and Opening-up over the past four decades.
