Yau Gok: The must-have snack for Guangdong's New Year celebration

During Chinese New Year in Guangdong, one snack stands out on almost every table: Yau Gok, also known as Cantonese sweet fried dumplings. These crispy treats, filled with peanuts, coconut, sesame seeds, and sugar, are a beloved part of the New Year celebration.

I invited my friend Lilia and her family to my local friend's home to experience the joy of making Yau Gok. As we gathered around the kitchen, Lilia mentioned how the process reminded her of making similar treats with her grandma back in Mexico. Although she didn't know how to make them, the experience inspired her to try making them with her daughters in the future.

What makes Yau Gok unique is not just its delicious filling, but the way it's shaped and sealed. The edges are carefully pinched and locked together to create a little "purse," symbolizing a prosperous year ahead with a wallet full of money.

The tradition of deep-frying Yau Gok is believed to bring happiness and good fortune. The popping oil is said to usher in prosperity and good food for the year. Making these dumplings is a way to bond with family and friends, share wishes for the upcoming year, and keep cherished traditions alive.
