In Qiemo County, Bayingolin Mongol Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang, 100,000 high-quality seafood, including pearl mussels, mullets, groupers, and black seabreams, have achieved a survival rate of 99% after more than two months of growth, marking China's successful cultivation and breeding of seafood in the desert. The first batch of "desert-produced" marine fish is expected to hit the market by the end of 2024.
Located in the southeastern part of the Taklimakan Desert, Qiemo County is surrounded by deserts on three sides. The Qiemo Fresh Aquatic Products Co., Ltd. has established a breeding farm in the local desert, simulating the marine environment in local ponds by developing a fully ecological intelligent thermostatic circulation system, and restoring saline-alkali water in the desert into seawater for marine fish farming.
In June 2024, the vast sandy sea far away from the ocean welcomed its first batch of "marine residents," with the water quality of the fish ponds meeting the standards. At present, the 100,000 baby fishes have gradually grown from around three centimeters to eight or nine centimeters, successfully "settling down" in the desert.
