Italian President marvels at Guangzhou's new central axis: "An astonishing pace of development!"

"The transformation of Zhujiang New Town into a thriving, modern hub in just over two decades is truly remarkable," exclaimed Italian President Sergio Mattarella as he gazed upon the nightscape of Guangzhou from the 108th-floor Cloud Observation Deck and Star Observation Deck of Canton Tower on the evening of November 11.

After learning about the city's rapid evolution, President Mattarella praised Guangzhou's urban development achievements, stating, "China's reform and opening-up over the past 40-plus years have left a profound impression with Guangdong's swift progress and massive changes—a testament to a true miracle."

The Italian President's visit to the Canton Tower was part of his state visit to China from November 7 to 12. This visit marked the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Italy and the 700th anniversary of the death of the legendary Italian explorer Marco Polo. This was Mattarella's second visit to China in seven years.

During his sojourn at the tower, President Mattarella also ventured onto the fully transparent glass "Skywalk," enjoying a breathtaking aerial view of the city. "Guangzhou manages its large population with impressive orderliness; it's truly commendable," he remarked.

Throughout his visit, Mattarella highly praised Guangzhou, a city steeped in a millennium of history and culture, emphasizing its role as a bridge between the East and the West. "Guangzhou has not only preserved its cultural traditions but also stands at the forefront of openness, adeptly integrating foreign elements with its indigenous culture," he noted.

Guangzhou has forged friendly relations with five Italian cities, with Bari becoming its first European sister city in 1986. Subsequently, Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) on Enhanced Cooperation were signed with Milan in 2012, Genoa in 2016, Padua in 2017, and Turin in 2021.

Over the years, Guangzhou and Italian cities have engaged in mutually beneficial exchanges and cooperation in education, culture, tourism, and environmental sustainability, reinforcing the foundation of Sino-Italian friendship through these city-to-city partnerships.
