Well known as the "National Treasure of the Bird World", the oriental stork is a large wading bird. The body length of the males are about 119-128 cm while that of the female about 111-121 cm. Last year the bird was listed as a national first-class protected wild animal in China.
This kind of bird is a winter migratory bird, inhabiting northeastern China, Inner Mongolia, Japan, Korea and other places in summer, and migrating to the east and south of China in winter.
The oriental stork was first observed in Guangdong in the 1990s in Zhuhai. In recent years, oriental storks have been observed in Guangzhou Nansha Wetland Park, Shenzhen Futian Mangrove Nature Reserve and Leizhou Mangrove Forest in east Guandong’s Zhanjiang. They are extremely rare and generally seen singly.
Experts speculate that this oriental stork was left alone during the migration, and it may return to the northward migration team after a rest. The research team will also continue to monitor the migration of this bird and other large wading birds.
Besides oriental stork, there are also herons, white-bellied harriers, great egrets, cormorants, black-faced spoonbills and green-winged ducks in the park.
