Guangdong in Winter Olympics | Inline Hockey: another way to get in touch with winter sports

Editor's note:

The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics are coming soon. The vibe of ice and snow sports in China is getting stronger. Even though there is almost no snow in Guangdong, the province is participating in the Winter Olympics in different forms. In this series, we will explore Guangdong's participation in the Winter Olympics, and share with you the passion for ice and snow in southern China!

Inline hockey, also known as roller inline hockey, is the official competitive event of the International Ice Hockey Federation, as well as the official competitive event of the 13th National Games in Tianjin and the 14th National Winter Games in Inner Mongolia. Guangdong was one of the earliest provinces in China to develop inline hockey and has a history of more than 20 years.

In addition to the difference between the sports field and roller skates, Inline hockey shares many similarities with ice hockey, such as equipment, tactics, and sliding techniques. Therefore, starting from training of inline hockey to ice hockey is also a useful method for China to select ice hockey talent.

Since Beijing is going to host the Winter Olympics, even Guangdong, where ice and snow resources are scarce, has intensified its efforts to develop inline hockey. This is the beginning of many young people engaging in ice and snow sports in the province. Many teenagers practice inline hockey first, then switch from roller skating to ice skating, and become professional athletes.

The Xuanfeng Inline Hockey Stadium in Guangzhou Asian Games City Gymnasium was the first inline hockey training venue in China rebuilt from the Asian Games stadium. In order to recycle the venues of the 2012 Asian Games, the operator replaced part of the floor of the gymnasium with the floor from the roller skating hockey rink of the Tianjin National Games in 2018, and began to let teenagers train inline for hockey here. After the completion of the inline hockey gymnasium, primary schools near the Asian Games City began to form inline hockey teams. Now, there are more than 200 roller skating students in this stadium.

Nowadays, the Asian Games City also invites experts from the selection team of the national women's ice hockey team to choose outstanding athletes for the national team. What's more, Guangdong holds the Guangdong Youth Inline Hockey Competition and the Guangzhou Inline Hockey Club League every year to attract more young people to participate in the sport.
