Another new species named after Guangzhou's Haizhu

Haizhu wetland is always a choice for close contact with nature. A biodiversity survey project on February 18 announced that in this lovely park in downtown Guangzhou they found a new species, and they named it after the region - Falsonnanocerus haizhuensis.

The specimen of the Falsonnanocerus is 6.2 mm long and 2.48 mm wide with a black, oblong, and slender body. The body is mostly covered with short, thick, yellowish setae. At present, all relevant research results about the species have been published in Biodiversity Data Journal, an international academic journal, in December 2021.

"The discovery of a new insect has been the result of serendipity," said Zhu Jiang, the discoverer of Falsonnanocerus and a tutor at the Haizhu Wetland Nature School. He explained that the Falsonnanocerus was found during a daily monitoring process in the School.

"The insects are the largest group in the animal kingdom, so it is common to find new species of insects. But it is still astonishing to find new insects in a downtown area with high population density and human disturbance."

It is the second time that a new species has been found in this wetland and named after this region! Last October, a new species of the leaf-beetle genus Sphenoraia was discovered here and was named as Sphenoraia (Sphenoraioides) haizhuensis.

According to Zhu, with the new discovery of Falsonnanocerus, there are now 536 species of insects, 183 species of birds, 835 species of vascular plants, and 60 species of fish in Haizhu Wetland.
