Guangzhou's advanced technologies shine in Beijing Winter Olympics

First underwater torch relay in the world, 8K ultra-high-definition broadcast, intelligent robots automatically capturing and monitoring body temperature... Guangzhou's advanced technologies have supported and shone in the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

On February 22, a number of research institutions and enterprises based in Guangzhou shared their experiences of supporting the Beijing 2022 during a story-telling session in Guangzhou.

First underwater torch relay in the world

Two underwater robots developed by the Guangdong Institute of Intelligent Unmanned Systems participated in the torch relay of the Winter Olympics. This is the first time in the world that a robot participated in an underwater torch relay. This institute developed the control system of the robot, which is the core component. The project team carried out nearly 200 outdoor tests at minus 20°C in three months, and finally achieved success.

Dr. Liu Xinyu, head of the underwater torch relay robot design team, said that the torch relay underwater conveyed people's enthusiasm for Beijing 2022 as well as friendship and peace to the world.

8K ultra-high-definition broadcast brings a better visual experience

For the first time in the history of the Olympic Games, Beijing 2022 used 8K ultra-high-definition video technology to live broadcast the opening ceremony, important events and closing ceremony. 8K ultra-high-definition broadcast can capture richer picture details and bring audiences an immersive visual experience.

Affected by terrain and weather, the Winter Olympics are more difficult to shoot and broadcast on-site than the Summer Olympics. In addition, sports competitions also have high requirements for shooting equipment. Therefore, Guangzhou-based BOSMA independently developed China's first 8K50 frame miniaturized broadcast camera to solve these problems.

Zhang Aoxue, deputy general manager of BOSMA, said that after the Winter Olympics, the public will also be able to enjoy 8K high-definition technology in their daily life.

The LED display screen on the opening and closing ceremonies that creates the naked-eye 3D effect is also developed by Guangzhou company too. A total of 42,208 50-centimeter LED modules were used in this floor screen, forming the core area of the stage with a total area of 7,000 square meters. This is the world's largest LED 3D stereoscopic stage at present, with a pixel display level of 14880×7248, which is close to 8 8K resolutions, and can present a naked-eye 3D effect.

High-tech epidemic prevention made the Winter Olympics safer

The intelligent robot independently developed by SAITE has become the "anti-epidemic housekeeper" in the Winter Olympics venues. It can not only automatically capture and monitor the body temperature of every person entering the venue, but also carry out daily disinfection in the venues, covering an area of 45,000 square meters.

This robot is the world's first robot with self-disinfection function, which has various functions such as disinfection, temperature measurement, and aseptic distribution. Its has a 4-hour continuous work period and is self-charging.

In addition, KingMed Diagnostics set up a team of nearly 500 people to serve nucleic acid testing in more than 50 areas such as the National Stadium, National Speed Skating Stadium, and National Gymnasium. The "Falcon" mobile medical testing laboratory has a maximum daily testing capacity of nearly 30,000 tubes, and the test results can be obtained within 6 hours.
