Guangdong ranks 1st in IPR protection development index across China

Guangdong has ranked 1st across China in terms of both comprehensive and protection indexes of IPR development for 9 consecutive years, according to the 2021 white paper on the province's IPR protection released Tuesday.

In 2021, Guangdong has made great efforts on encoraging independent Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), seeing 440,000 effective patent inventions and 26,100 international patent applications via Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), also topping the country.

The province registered the country's largest number of valid trademarks in 2021, exceeding 6.76 million.

Last year also saw Guangdong’s progress in IP cooperation with Hong Kong and Macao and the three regions have carried out 356 collaboration projects.

Besides, 12 intellectual property business windows in Guangdong have set up an on-site consulting desk offering services about how to handle IPR business in Hong Kong.

Another work focus is IP commercialization. In 2021, the province recorded patent implementation license contracts worth over 1.72 billion RMB, with the number of patent transfer amounting to 69,000. A total of 49,261 contracts on the transfer of technology were registered, valuing 429.27 billion RMB.

In addition, 10 agricultural products have been included in the second batch of the China-EU Agreement on Geographical Indications including lychee from Guangzhou’s Zengcheng District, tangerine peel from Zhanjiang’s Xinhui county, and golden pomelo from Meizhou.
