China's first specialized law on wetland protection takes effect

China's first specialized law on wetland protection takes effect on June 1.

Wetlands are valuable resources that mankind has praised as the kidney of the earth. By the end of 2021, the total area of wetlands in Guangdong is about 1789 km², including 4 wetlands of international importance, 2 wetlands of national importance, 13 wetlands of provincial importance, and 27 national wetland parks.

Known as "Coast Guards", mangrove forest is a very important kind of wetlands. Naturally endowed with a coastline of over 4,000 kilometers, Guangdong currently has 106.4 km² of mangrove forests. They are mainly distributed in western Guangdong and the Pearl River Delta.

The construction of "Mangrove City"—Zhanjiang—provides abundant experiences for the protection and restoration of mangroves in the world.

In 2021, the province planned to build and restore 80 km² of mangrove forests by 2025.
