Tseung Kwan O - Lam Tin Tunnel and Cross Bay Link opens to traffic on December 11th

The Tseung Kwan O - Lam Tin Tunnel (TKO-LT Tunnel) and the Cross Bay Link (CBL) in Sai Kung, Hong Kong opened to traffic on December 11th. John Lee Ka-chiu, Chief Executive of Hong Kong SAR, officiated the opening ceremony of the project on the morning of December 10th.

The opening of this roadway has now shortened the commuting time between Lohas Park and Kwun Tong Town Centre by as much as 20 minutes. An estimated 400,000 Tseung Kwan O residents will benefit from the expected alleviation of traffic congestion.

The CBL is about 1.8km long. It is the first maritime viaduct in Hong Kong with a carriageway, footpath, cycle track, and viewing platforms.

The project is a textbook example of Guangdong-Hong Kong collaboration in the construction of large bridges. Except for the pile and pier foundations require being poured onsite, the rest of the components were prefabricated and then installed onsite.

The Xinhui Prefabrication Plant of the Second Engineering Company of CCCC Fourth Harbour Engineering in Jiangmen, Guangdong was responsible for the prefabrication and shipment of 18 prestressed box girders for the Tseung Kwan O Cross Bay Link. Among the box girders, the heaviest was 3,300 tons. They set a record as the heaviest of similar structures in China.

The technical team came up with the idea of a Self-Propelled Modular Transporter (SPMT) for transporting the box girders. This was the first time that an SPMT was utilized to transport large concrete components in China.

Furthermore, the installation of this bridge is the world's largest project to have applied the float-over method to date.
