Holiday travel at Guangzhou Baiyun Airport: Everything you should know

The May Day holiday, one of the three longest holidays in China, will take place from May 1 to May 5 this year. If you’re planning to travel by plane, here are the FAQs at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport. 

Q: What should I do when traveling during thunderstorms? 

A: For those who have travel plans, please pay close attention to the weather forecast and the latest flight information released by the airlines, especially about the flight adjustments.

Q: What time should I get to the airport? 

A: There will be a travel boom during the upcoming May Day holiday. 

For domestic flights, it is advised that passengers arrive at the airport two to three hours ahead of the flight time. The check-in counter will close 40 minutes before taking off. 

For international flights, it is suggested that passengers should arrive at the airport three to four hours ahead of the flight time. The check-in counter will close 45 minutes to 90 minutes before taking off. 

Q: Where is the departure tax refund office at the airport?

A: There are departure tax refund offices at both T1 and T2. 

T1: It is at the entrance of the East 1 corridor behind the international security check. 

T2: It is located on the third floor in the central shopping area behind the international departures joint inspection hall (next to the United currency exchange). For more information, please call the service hotline 020-36470974. 

Q: Where is the overseas WIFI rental service counter?

A: The overseas WIFI rental service counter is located at the Roamingman, No.46 Gate, F3, International departure hall, T2 (outside of the security check).

Q: How much luggage can I bring onboard? 

A: Different airlines have their own carry-on luggage restrictions. Please refer to the carry-on luggage rules on the airline's website before departure. Generally speaking, each passenger can have one carry-on luggage, which must weigh less than 5 kg and must not exceed 55 centimeters in length, 40 centimeters in width, and 20 centimeters in height. Those in first class can take two carry-on luggage pieces weighing 5 kg.

Q: Can I bring makeup onboard? 

A: A small amount of cosmetics for personal use can be carried on board. Each passenger is allowed to carry only one piece of each type of cosmetics, with a volume of no more than 100 ml or 100 g each. These bottles must have clear labels, with a total volume within 1,000 ml.

Otherwise, they should be put inside the checked baggage. The cosmetic products shall not bear flammable and explosive labels and may be inspected by opening the bottle if necessary. Everything is subject to on-site security checks.

Q: Can I take a power bank onboard? 

A: According to the relevant regulations of the CAAC, passengers can bring a power bank on a plane. Power banks are allowed inside the cabin but they’re not allowed in checked baggage.

Lithium batteries and power banks are prohibited from being checked in as baggage. To bring them onboard, they must have clear logos, with the rated energy not exceeding 100 Wh. If the rated energy falls within the range of 100Wh to 160 Wh, it must be approved by the airline and each person is limited to bring 2 pieces. Rated energy exceeding 160Wh is not allowed. Everything is subject to on-site security checks.

Q: Can I bring a razor onboard? 

A: Manual razors cannot be carried onboard, while the manual shaver body (excluding the blade) is allowed. Razor blades can be removed and placed in checked baggage. Please refer to the on-site security check.

Electric razors can `be carried onboard if they have lithium batteries that meet battery carrying regulations and safety-razor blades. If the lithium battery is removable, it must be carried onboard, and the electric shaver body (excluding the lithium battery) can be checked in as baggage.

Q: What should I do if I lost something at the airport? 

A: If you lost your stuff at the airport, you can report through the following two ways: 

1.  Scan the following QR codes to report or find by yourself. 

2. Call the 24-hour service hotline of the airport at 020-96158 and dial 5 to report lost and found. 

Q: What should I do if I lose my ID card? 

A: The Chinese Mainland residents can get a temporary boarding certificate for domestic flights either through the WeChat mini-program “民航临时乘机证明”( CAAC temporary boarding certificate) or on-site police office at the airport.
