Guangzhou Metro has achieved 5G continuous coverage across its entire network, marking the official entry of 5G in all stations and intervals of the metro system. This milestone follows the completion of the 5G communication network upgrade on Line 5 and the northern extension of Line 3.
Passengers on the Guangzhou Metro can now enjoy seamless and faster internet connectivity, whether they are on the platforms or traveling in moving trains. The upgrade has resulted in a substantial increase in the average downlink speed within tunnels, from 70 to 80 Mbps to 400 to 600 Mbps, significantly enhancing the surfing experience for commuters.
The journey to full 5G coverage was not without challenges. The area of signal upgrade focused on stations and intervals within the metro's enclosed tunnels, where the high integration of equipment and complex coordination posed significant technical and safety risks.
Furthermore, the need to maintain normal operations meant that the upgrade work could only be carried out during the 2.5-hour window after trains stopped operating each night. At the peak of signal upgrading, over 800 workers were simultaneously deployed on 12 lines.
To overcome these hurdles and expedite the project, Guangzhou Metro collaborated with China Tower Guangdong Corporation (Guangdong Tower) to establish a standardized safety management system and construction specifications.
Guangzhou Metro categorized 1,096 unique scenarios into nine conventional coverage methods and introduced an innovative "interval slicing" construction model. This approach allowed for the completion and delivery of each interval as soon as it was ready, enabling the installation of 1.7 million fixtures, the laying of 2.7 million meters of cable, and the activation of 8,300 devices. As a result, the project was completed four months ahead of schedule.
The 5G upgrade covers both directions of 14 existing lines spanning nearly 800 kilometers, making Guangzhou Metro a national benchmark for the largest-scale 5G signal upgrade in rail transit. The project's success is attributed to technological innovation, including customized fusion products for optical fiber boxes, POIs, and combiners, which reduced the number of installations and construction duration. Additionally, the introduction of digital smart helmets and law enforcement recorders enhanced on-site supervision, real-time feedback, and rapid response capabilities.
Guangzhou Metro plans to continue its collaboration with Guangdong Tower to deepen 5G coverage across its network, providing passengers with advanced communication technology and network experience. This initiative contributes to Guangzhou's role as a model for urban infrastructure development and the enhancement of dual-gigabit city network services in China.
The seamless integration of 5G technology into the Guangzhou Metro not only elevates the passenger experience but also underscores the city's commitment to fostering a digital economy and smart city infrastructure. With 5G now fully operational within the metro, Guangzhou reinforces its position as a technological leader, paving the way for future innovations and improvements in public transportation.
