On January 2, 2024, the Thai Minister of Tourism and Sports, Ms. Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol, announced the number of foreign tourists who visited Thailand in 2023. A total of over 28 million individuals visited, contributing to an income of more than 1.2 trillion baht (roughly 40 billion US dollars).
The countries with the highest number of tourist arrivals were Malaysia, with 4,563,020 visitors, followed by China (3,519,735), South Korea (1,658,688), India (1,626,720), and Russia (1,481,878).
On the same day, after a weekly cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin revealed the Thai-Chinese visa-free scheme, which will take effect on March 1.
He emphasized that this action will not only boost Thailand's tourism sector but also symbolize the strengthened friendly ties between the two nations.
