Guangdong is set to promote the construction of comprehensive and field-oriented national science and technology innovation centers and leverage provincial-municipal collaboration to attract 27 world-class innovation research institutions, including the National Nanoscience Center, to set up in Guangdong.
Meanwhile, Guangdong will continue its support for 277 new-type research institutions, focusing on innovation driven by industry needs and accelerating the application of technological achievements in industrial fields.
Guangdong plans to establish provincial-enterprise joint funds to accelerate the resolution of scientific issues in industrial development, and to encourage enterprises, social organizations, and individuals to support basic research through investments, donations, and the establishment of funds. Over the past four years, the province has set up eight joint funds with 11 enterprises, focusing on various industries. In 2023, enterprises donated 56 million yuan to the provincial fund, with cumulative investment reaching 171 million yuan. This has accelerated the construction of a multi-faceted investment mechanism for basic research.
This announcement was made during the inaugural ceremony for an exploration tour to see the province's solution for new productive forces on May 14. Over 100 representatives from 21 national and local media outlets embarked on the journey in Guangzhou, spending a week to tour several mainland GBA cities, including Shenzhen and Zhuhai.
Guangdong Province, an economic powerhouse in South China, held its provincial high-quality development conference on the first working day after the Chinese New Year holiday. The conference emphasized the combination of sci-tech innovation and industrial development.
Sci-tech innovation has been a priority for Guangdong. According to the Guangdong Department of Science and Technology, Guangdong's total R&D expenditure was approximately 460 billion yuan in 2023, accounting for 3.39% of the province's GDP. The Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Guangzhou science and technology cluster has been ranked second globally in the Global Innovation Index (GII) for four consecutive years.
The province emphasizes its will to accelerate the establishment of the whole-process innovation chain featuring "basic research + technological breakthroughs + achievement commercialization + fintech + human resources" and create an industrial S&T innovation center with global influence.
