Guangzhou's Nansha District held Mazu Cultural Activities at Nansha Tianhou Palace from May 11 to 14 to celebrate the 1,063rd anniversary of the birth of Mazu — a revered goddess of the sea.
Visitors enjoyed traditional Chinese drama, dance, and Kung fu shows during the event.
Mazu, literally referring to "maternal ancestor," is also known as "Mazupo" in east China's Fujian Province, where her hometown is located, and "A-Ma" in Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), whose Portuguese name of "Macao" came from the pronunciation of the word "Mazu Pavilion."
The goddess safeguards fishermen's lives and is widely respected throughout the country's coastal areas and countless Chinese communities around the world.
