On March 13, Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao held the Meteorological Operational Cooperation Conference, marking the 29th edition of the event.
The conference brought together meteorological experts from Hong Kong, Macao, Guangdong, Hainan, and Guangxi. It summarized the implementation of the Meteorological Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (2020-2035) over the past year and discussed the business development and cooperation plans for the next stage.
Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao deepen meteorological cooperation for 15th National Games
Cao Xiaozhong, Deputy Director of the China Meteorological Administration (CMA), pointed out that the CMA has always attached great importance to strengthening meteorological cooperation among Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao. Meteorological service support for the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) is a key focus of the China Meteorological Administration in promoting regional meteorological cooperation at present and in the future.
He stated that it is necessary to jointly create a new high ground for meteorological integration and development in the GBA, strengthen comprehensive and in-depth cooperation, adhere to innovation-driven development, and work together to create an internationally advanced demonstration zone.
Since the preparations for the 15th National Games began, Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao have closely focused on the needs of marathon and road cycling events that involve collaboration among the three regions and have made various preparations and safeguards.
In terms of communication mechanisms, joint working groups and joint weather consultation mechanisms have been established to facilitate smooth communication channels. As for data sharing, forecast service products and monitoring station data are exchanged in real-time. Meteorological risk points have also been identified for high-impact weather.
Currently, Guangdong has established a meteorological center for the 15th National Games to be responsible for meteorological service support. The station network layout around the venues has been improved, creating an omnidirectional and three-dimensional monitoring network to ensure no dead zones in monitoring and instant data arrival.
Additionally, big data, artificial intelligence, and other technologies have been integrated to develop high-precision forecast products for key areas, significantly enhancing the ability for fixed-point early warnings. Customized and precise services have also been introduced, clarifying the thresholds for high-impact weather for outdoor events.
Jointly building the lightning locating system to empower the three regions
The operational cooperation conference among Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao is held annually and is hosted by the three parties in rotation. This year coincides with the 20th anniversary of the joint construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao lightning locating system.
In 2005, the lightning locating system, consisting of five lightning detection stations in Sanshui, Guangdong; Chung Hom Kok, Tsim Bei Tsui, and Sha Tau Kok in Hong Kong; and Taipa in Macao, was successfully established and began to provide lightning location information services. In July, meteorologists from the three regions celebrated the completion and opening of the lightning locating network at the Sanshui station.
Over the past two decades, meteorologists from Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao have worked together to monitor lightning activities in the Pearl River Delta around the clock, providing reliable scientific and technological support for thunderstorm observations and forecasts.
During the conference, experts visited the EHang Intelligent Technology Park to investigate the meteorological service support needs for low-altitude economic aircraft and to understand the construction of airborne meteorological detection equipment.
