Second session of the 14th Guangdong Provincial People's Congress kicks off

The second session of the 14th Guangdong Provincial People's Congress kicked off on January 23 in Guangzhou. 

Wang Weizhong, Governor of Guangdong Province, delivered the government work report at the opening ceremony. 

According to Wang, the gross domestic product (GDP) of Guangdong province amounted to 13.57 trillion yuan in 2023, making it the first province in China to surpass the 13-trillion-yuan mark in annual GDP and maintaining its position as the top provincial economy in the country for 35 consecutive years.

Wang indicated that total retail sales of consumer goods hit 4.7-trillion-yuan, an increase of 5.8% year-on year. Value-added of large industrial enterprises reached 4-trillion-yuan, an increase of 4.4% compared to the year before.

Furthermore, Guangzhou’s GDP hit 3-trillion-yuan, while Shenzhen became the second city that total consumption reached trillion yuan.  

As of the end of 2023, the province has more than 18 million registered business entities, accounting for one-seventh of the country's total. Over 1.70 million new business entities were registered in the province last year.

Wang further indicated that Guangdong has set a goal of 5 percent of GDP growth rate in 2024.

In 2024, the province's fixed-asset investment is expected to increase by 4 percent, retail sales of consumer goods by 6 percent, total import and export volume by 1 percent. The CPI increase is expected to be about 3 percent.

Guangdong will focus on the development of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and High-quality Development Projects for Guangdong Counties, Towns and Villages in 2024. 

Furthermore, real economy and manufacturing will be highlighted this year, with the goal of building a modern industrial system with world competitiveness.

Also, Guangdong plans to enhance its level of reform and opening-up, as well as boost its ecological work to create a harmonious coordination between human and nature.
