When a Guangzhou metro station meets emergency rescue

On April 6th, at around 1:55 pm, a male passenger in his 70s suddenly collapsed on the platform of Changgang Metro Station in Guangzhou, displaying symptoms of a heart attack. Thanks to the efforts of several quick-thinking passengers and station employees, the man was revived and taken to the hospital for further treatment.

The incident began when several concerned passengers rushed over to station attendant Wu Zhiyong, who was on duty in the station hall at that time. The passengers informed him that a man had collapsed on the platform, and Wu quickly sprang into action.

Wu found the man lying on the ground near gate 9, with his wife frantically attempting to revive him. Wu soon learned from the wife that her husband, Mr. Huang, had a history of heart disease and was on his way to the hospital for a check-up when the incident occurred. Mr. Huang had convulsions and showed signs of cyanosis (bluish skin discolouration due to lack of oxygen).

Without hesitation, Wu called the station control room for assistance and requested an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). He also began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on Mr. Huang. Meanwhile, station employee Tan Jianwei rushed to a nearby hospital to find medical professionals who could assist with the emergency.

After one round of defibrillation, Mr. Huang regained consciousness and began breathing on his own. However, his pulse remained weak, and he was unresponsive to the calls of the station employees.

Undeterred, the employees took turns performing CPR on Mr. Huang until medical staff from the nearby hospital arrived at 2:08 pm. They performed CPR and defibrillation together with station staff, and administered additional treatment. At 2:18 pm, 120 medical staff arrived with portable wheelchairs and other professional equipment.

Personnel at the scene have insisted on performing CPR for nearly 20 minutes on the passenger before transferring him to the hospital.

Thanks to the quick response of the station employees and the assistance of medical professionals, Mr. Huang was successfully treated for acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) and underwent surgery the following day. On April 17th, his wife returned to the station to express her gratitude to the staff who had helped save her husband's life.

Guangzhou Metro reminds passengers to take care of their health during the unpredictable spring weather, particularly if they have a history of medical problems. Passengers are advised to travel with a partner if possible and seek help from station staff when in need.
