Guangdong EV and batteries exports see rapid growth in Q1

The electric vehicles produced in Guangdong are popular in the overseas market. The export volume of electric vehicles from Nansha Automobile Port, which is the largest ro-ro auto port in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, in the first quarter of 2023 has exceeded that of the whole of last year, with a year-on-year increase of more than 20 times.

According to the statistics published on AutoLife's website in Thailand, one of BYD's (an auto manufacturer in Guangdong) new models sold 2,434 units in March, ranking 1st in local electric vehicles sales three consecutive times. In the first quarter of this year, BYD exported about 38 thousand units.

Due to the rapid development of the electric vehicle industry, Guangdong's battery exports have also seen growth. The first phase of the Zhongchuang Xinhang Battery Project in Jiangmen City has started manufacturing. With an investment of 13.5 billion RMB, the first phase of the project has a planned production capacity of 35 GWh and meets the demand for batteries for 700 thousand vehicles worldwide.

"Guangdong's exports have been dominated by traditional labour-intensive products for a long time, such as clothes, shoes, and socks. In recent years, exports of household appliances, mechanical and electrical products as well as high-tech products such as electric vehicles have been increasing," said Lin Jiang, Professor of the Department of Economics of Sun Yat-sen University.

The popularity of Guangdong's electric vehicles and batteries in overseas markets is based on the province's industrial competitiveness developed over the years.

The automotive industry in Guangdong has exceeded one trillion RMB in output in 2022. Guangdong's battery enterprises, such as BYD, Sunwoda, and EVE are among the top ten battery suppliers in China. In March 2023, the Guangdong government also announced that the province plans to achieve 1 trillion outputs in the new energy storage industry by 2027.

"Guangdong is accelerating the development of new energy industries. As a result, the export value of electric vehicles and batteries from Guangdong will contribute to green and low carbon development around the world," said Chen Wanling, Director of the International Economic and Trade Research Centre at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies.
