First Chongqing-Shenzhen-Hong Kong freight train sets off

On the morning of August 20, a freight train loaded with a full cargo of automotive parts, electronics and other merchandise departed from Chongqing's Tuanjiecun Station, marking the launch of a regular Chongqing-Shenzhen-Hong Kong freight service.

This train will arrive at Shenzhen's Yantian Port within two days. The cargo will be promptly transferred to Hong Kong's Kwai Tsing Port for onward shipment via international vessels to all continents except Antarctica.

The launch also signifies the official opening of Yantian Port's 16th inland port—Chongqing's Tuanjiecun Station.

According to Cen Qicheng, managing director of Yantian International Container Terminals, Yantian Port in Shenzhen boasts the densest Europe-America routes in southern China, while Hong Kong's Kwai Tsing Port dominates the Asian and South American markets with the highest number of relevant routes in the Greater Bay Area.

"Yantian International will continue to support Shenzhen's efforts to build a globally influential logistics hub, consolidating and enhancing Hong Kong's status as an international shipping and trading center, jointly enhancing the overall international competitiveness of the Greater Bay Area, and contributing to the nation's high-quality development of foreign trade," said Cen.

Xu Min, deputy division chief of the Port and Waterway Administration Division of Shenzhen Municipal Transport Bureau, noted that the official launch of Chongqing's inland port not only furthers the development of sea-rail intermodal transport between Chongqing, Shenzhen and Hong Kong, but also facilitates the smooth flow of logistics between the Greater Bay Area and the Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Zone, creating a swift channel for inland goods to reach the world.
Klaus Chan, principal assistant secretary for Transport and Logistics Bureau of Hong Kong, believes that the freight train model will significantly expand the cargo reach of both Hong Kong and Yantian Port, boosting their cargo volumes.

To date, Yantian International has established 16 inland ports, 31 sea-rail intermodal routes, 13 feeder ports and 17 feeder routes. From 2019 to 2023, the port's sea-rail intermodal volume recorded double-digit growth for five consecutive years.
