Smartphone manufacturing in Dongguan: AI and intelligent manufacturing take the lead among manufacturers

"The nearly 100-meter-long SMT (Surface Mount Technology) production line can complete the assembly process of 9,000 mobile phones every day, and it only takes 10 seconds to finish each assembly process," said a staff member of OPPO at the Smart Phone Digital Intelligent Factory, as a high-quality development-themed media delegation visited the company Thursday to explore its intelligent manufacturing.

The staff told GDToday that the implementation of intelligent manufacturing has enabled the company to enhance production efficiency. Currently, it only takes 2 hours to complete the entire sequence of processes, including motherboard production, assembly, and testing for the production of a smartphone.

The electronic information manufacturing industry, represented by mobile phones, is the largest industry in Dongguan and also the first world-class industrial cluster in the area, with an output value of over one trillion yuan. Globally leading smartphone companies such as Huawei, OPPO, and vivo are all located in the city. It is reported that one out of every four mobile phones in the world is produced in Dongguan.

After years of construction, OPPO's Global Computing Center has been put into operation in 2023. Its cloud computing power can train AI models with 100 billion parameters, providing assistance to enterprises in the field of technological innovations such as cloud computing and the Internet of Things.

Nowadays, the AI large model ecosystem is becoming increasingly prosperous, ushering in a new wave of innovation in the industry.

In February 2024, the OPPO AI Center was established in Dongguan, which aims to drive innovation and ecological restructuring of smartphones with AI technology.

"This year, the demand for domestic consumers to upgrade their mobile phones has grown significantly," said Yue Wentao, Assistant President of OPPO China. "We hope to promote the application of AI technology on smartphones, and work with upstream and downstream partners to build an AI-enabled phone ecosystem."

"In my view, an AI-enabled phone should possess four key capabilities," said Yuan Lunxi, the Head of the Smart Creation Group at OPPO AI Center. "First, it should be able to learn independently, grow on its own, and evolve certain functions by itself. Second, it should have creative abilities. Third, it should have the ability to efficiently utilize computing power. And fourth, as an intelligent entity, it should be able to interface with upper-level applications and underlying operating systems."
