In Haizhu's lockdown zone, when a fishbone was stuck in a woman's throat for over 10h...

"Emergency! The patient transferred from Haizhu's lockdown zone had a fishbone stuck in the throat for more than 10 hours," said a medical staff member of the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University.

In an urgent situation, the hospital started the green channel to treat the patient.

On the night of October 30, the patient surnamed Fang (assumed name), who lives in the lockdown area of Haizhu District, accidentally swallowed a fishbone while eating, and ran out of methods to discharge the fishbone at home and feel continuous pain.

Anxiously, Fang contacted the community and called 120, and went to the hospital.

With COVID-19 prevention and control measures taken, the emergency room doctors, together with otolaryngologists, performed an electronic laryngoscopy on the patient. However, no fishbones were detected. Given the patient's symptoms, the doctors inferred that the fishbone had already fallen into the esophagus. Then, a chest CT scan showed a foreign body in Fang's esophagus.

It had been more than 10 hours since the fishbone was stuck in her throat. Without timely removal of the fishbone, infection and even hemorrhage could occur due to the foreign body displacement.

The hospital used the green channel and had medical staff enter the isolation ward to perform the bedside emergency endoscopic removal of the esophageal foreign body for the patient. The fishbone was finally removed with treatment by the medical staff.
