XBB COVID-19 vaccine now available in Guangzhou

The XBB COVID-19 vaccine has recently arrived in Guangzhou, according to the Guangzhou Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Previously, China's top epidemiologist, Zhong Nanshan, pointed out at a public event that the COVID mutant strain has not changed much recently, but vaccine escape has been enhanced.

It is predicted that there will be a wave of small infection peaks from November to January next year, and residents, especially the elderly and people with low immunity, are recommended to receive vaccines against coronavirus variants as soon as possible.

The XBB variant of the new coronavirus is still the local epidemic strain in China. At present, the XBB COVID-19 vaccine has been distributed by the Guangdong Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention to Guangzhou and sent to vaccination sites.

The vaccine is Recombinant COVID-19 Trivalent (XBB.1.5+BA.5+Delta) Protein Vaccine developed by WestVac Biopharma / West China Medical Center, Sichuan University.

In terms of vaccination precautions, adults aged 18 and above who have completed primary immunization (i.e., completed 1 dose of adenovirus vector vaccine, or completed 2 doses of inactivated vaccine, or completed 3 doses of recombinant protein vaccine), or have been infected with COVID-19, can receive 1 dose of the vaccine containing the antigen component of the XBB variant.

The vaccination time interval must be no less than 3 months from the last COVID-19 vaccination. If a person is already infected, it should be no less than 6 months after their last infection.

Adults aged 18 years and older who have not completed primary immunization and have not been infected should be boosted at least 3 months after completing the primary immunization, and the XBB vaccine should be used for booster immunization.

People aged 3 to 17 only need to complete the primary immunization and cannot receive the XBB vaccine for the time being. Those who have been infected and have not completed the primary immunization can receive one dose of the vaccine 6 months after infection. The vaccine is limited to four types manufactured by Beijing Institute of Biological Products Co., Ltd., Wuhan Institute of Biological Products Co., Ltd., Sinovac Life Sciences Co., Ltd., and Zhifei Biological Products Co., Ltd.

Expats in Guangzhou can make an appointment for vaccination via the platform "Yuejiantong" WeChat mini-program ("粤健通"微信小程序), or contact the vaccination sites.

Currently, there are 127 vaccination sites in the city that provide XBB vaccine services.
