Guangzhou Metro to extend service hours for May Day holiday

With the upcoming May Day holiday, the Guangzhou Metro is getting ready for an expected surge in passenger numbers. According to Guangzhou Metro, the network is anticipating over 11 million passenger trips on April 30, the day before the holiday, with an average daily ridership of approximately 9.1 million during the holiday.

To ensure smooth travel for residents, Guangzhou Metro announced that on April 30 and May 1, the entire network will extend its service hours by one hour. Moreover, on May 4 and 5, certain metro lines will extend their services by 1 to 2.5 hours.

Expecting a peak passenger flow on April 30 due to the convergence of rush hour and short-distance travel, the metro system is making necessary arrangements. In addition to operating at capacities equivalent to regular Fridays, 1 to 3 extra trains will be flexibly added based on passenger volumes. Peak hours for Lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 14, and the Guangfo Line will be adjusted to start at 1 pm. The express service on Line 14 will switch to regular service from around 12:00 pm until the end of operation.

During the May Day holiday, which coincides with the third phase of the Canton Fair, and an influx of tourists to Guangzhou, Guangzhou Metro expects an increase in ridership compared to regular weekends. Therefore, some lines will adjust their capacities based on changes in passenger flow.

To facilitate the return journey for travelers, Lines 1, 3 (including the North Extension), 5, and 8 will extend their operating hours by one hour from May 4 to 5.

Line 2 and Line 7 will extend their services by 2.5 hours until 2:00 am the next day. During this extended period, trains will operate as follows: in the first extended hour, trains will stop at every station, followed by 1.5 hours of express service. Notably, the express service on Line 2 from Guangzhou South Railway Station to Jiahewanggang Station will only stop at Nanpu, Luoxi, Changgang, Gongyuanqian, Guangzhou Railway Station, Sanyuanli, Jiangxia, and Jiahewanggang Stations (南浦、洛溪、昌岗、公园前、广州火车站、三元里、江夏、嘉禾望岗站).

On Line 7, the express service from Guangzhou South Railway Station to Jitang Station will only stop at Hanxi Changlong, Yuangang, Higher Education Mega Center S., Dashadong, and Jitang Stations (汉溪长隆、员岗、大学城南、大沙东、姬堂).

As the city prepares for increased passenger flow at major transportation hubs, transfer stations, tourist attractions, commercial districts, and the China Import and Export Fair Complex (the Canton Fair Complex) during the day before the holiday and the five-day holiday period, Guangzhou Metro reminds residents to plan their travel routes and times in advance, travel during off-peak hours, and pay attention to station announcements and notices.
