Guangdong to invest over 800 billion RMB in water conservancy

Guangdong plans to input more than 800 billion RMB (about 126 USD) in water conservancy in the coming years, with more than 400 billion RMB within the "14th Five-Year Plan" period (2021-2025).

Wang Lixin, director general of the Water Resources Department of Guangdong Province made the remark at a press conference yesterday, which marks the 30th World Water Day and the first day of the 35th "China Water Week".

The conference elaborated The Opinions of the People's Government of Guangdong Province on Promoting the High-quality Development of Water Conservancy, highlighting 8 major projects, including the optimization of water resources allocation, enhancement of flood control capabilities, ecological belts, ecological conservation and restoration of rivers and lakes, water conservancy in rural areas, intelligent water conservation, hydrology modernization and the improvement of water conservancy abilities.

Build ecological belts of over 1,800 kilometers

The ecological belts are loved by the residents of the province as a choice for cycling and relax. It also has the function of flood control and ecological restoration. Guangdong has now ecological belts with a total length of 2,900 kilometers, and 1,800 kilometers ecological belts will be built this year.

The ecology-friendly coastline and the hiking lane at water banks were extended by 1,169 and 2,178 kilometers respectively, and link with tourism destinations.  

Guarantee the security of water supply in Hong Kong and Macao

Chen Renzhu, deputy director general of the Water Resources Department of Guangdong Province, stressed that Guangdong will strengthen water supply cooperation with Hong Kong and Macao.

"The province is currently constructing the Pearl River Delta water resources allocation project, Zhuhai-Macao water resource allocation project, as well as the preliminary work of the middle Pearl River area (including Zhuhai, Zhongshan and Jiangmen) water supply integration project. The completion of these projects will provide more solid support for a high-quality water supply in Hong Kong and Macao."
