Guangdong excels in latest Stanford/Elsevier's Top 2% Scientist Rankings

Guangdong delivers a standout performance in the latest Stanford/Elsevier Top 2% Scientist Rankings, with over 2,000 researchers from the province's universities, research institutes, and corporations included in the lists published on September 16, 2024.

The Stanford/Elsevier Top 2% Scientist Rankings, now in its seventh iteration, list the world's leading researchers, representing the top 2 percent of the most-cited scientists in various disciplines. Two ranking lists are released to recognize top scientists for their career-long and recent-year contributions, respectively.

Approximately 750 Guangdong-based researchers have been recognized for their career-long citations, while nearly 2,000 are listed in the rankings for citations in the single year of 2023, which favors those with a significant recent impact. Given the similar size of both rankings, the notable gap in the number of Guangdong scientists featured underscores the province's growing academic influence in recent years.

South China University of Technology and Sun Yat-sen University secure their leading positions in Guangdong, with the former topping the career-long citation rankings with 148 researchers, while Sun Yat-sen University leads with the highest number of 341 researchers for 2023 citations.

It is worth noting that researchers from Guangdong's corporations—such as tech giants Huawei and Tencent, along with appliance manufacturer Midea—are also featured in the rankings, highlighting the province's robust industry supported by strong research teams.
