Hengqin has initiated a new customs operation that allows tax-free transportation of most goods from the neighboring Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), effective from midnight on Friday.
Tariffs on goods entering Hengqin from Macao will generally be lifted, while goods moving from Hengqin to other parts of the Chinese mainland will now incur import duties unless they qualify for added-value tax exemption.
This strategic move is viewed as a significant enhancement of the "one country, two systems" framework in Macao, aimed at fostering economic diversification in the SAR.
