Clinical diagnosis and treatment are the key tasks for the three specialists. It is estimated that during their time in Hong Kong, they will collectively perform approximately 1,500 cataract surgeries, administer around 3,800 intravitreal injections for eye treatment, and conduct around 3,800 laser eye surgeries.
Professor Lin Haotian, director and president of the ZOC, revealed that preparations were underway for the establishment of an ophthalmology specialist alliance among universities in Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao. The three places will jointly develop an advanced ophthalmology center in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, which aims to promote the balanced development and collaborative sharing of high-quality medical resources and contribute to the construction of a healthy Greater Bay Area.
Since 2018, the ZOC has received 19,688 patients from Hong Kong seeking treatment for eye diseases. The number of Hong Kong and Macao patients with challenging eye conditions seeking medical care at the ZOC has been increasing.
Furthermore, the ZOC is in communication with relevant authorities in Hong Kong to promote the establishment of a referral system between Guangdong and Hong Kong. It aims to streamline the referral process for patients with difficult eye diseases to get treatment at the ZOC, so as to let more patients receive timely medical services.
