Recently, an infrared camera in Jiaoling Changtan Nature Reserve in Guangdong Province captured images of two pangolins. According to officials of the nature reserve, this is the first discovery of the Chinese pangolin in this reserve since the launch of the "infrared camera monitoring" project last year.
The footage captured by the infrared camera shows a cub snuggled up to an adult pangolin. After taking the cub back to the cave under the forest, the adult pangolin returned to the outside of the cave and covered the entrance with some hay. It can be inferred that the Chinese pangolin has been growing and breeding in this natural conservation for some time.
Chinese pangolins (order Pholidato, family Manidea) are wild animals under first-class national protection. They are the only existing toothless mammals with scales in the world.
Guangdong Jiaoling Changtan Provincial Nature Reserve is located in Jiaoling County of Meizhou City in Guangdong Province. In 2021, the nature reserve implemented the "infrared camera monitoring" project and placed 39 infrared cameras within its jurisdiction to monitor the community and population dynamics of terrestrial mammals and birds. At present, 40 species of wild animals have been discovered in this natural sanctuary, including the leopard cat, white necklaced partridge, silver pheasant, greater coucal, Chinese Hwamei, and red-billed leiothrix.
