Major medical progress highlighted in Guangzhou

"The mortality rate of acute myocardial infarction patients in China has dropped from between 10.1 and 12.4 percent before the launch of chest pain centers to between 3 and 4 percent. It solved the problem that several generations of cardiovascular doctors have been trying to solve."

Xiang Dingcheng, Director of the Department of Cardiology at the PLA Southern Theater Command General Hospital, said during a recent media interview held by the Information Office of Guangzhou Municipal People's Government.

Over the past ten years, Xiang and his colleagues have made continuous efforts to promote chest pain centers from Guangzhou to the whole country. It greatly improves China's urban acute myocardial infarction emergency care system, and successfully helps many chest pain patients increase their chances of survival.

Chen Dunjin, Director of the Guangzhou Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, established the first severe maternal rescue center in China with his team. He has been engaged in maternal critical care for more than 30 years while leading his team to establish this institute to promote the application of medical advancements.

Having practiced medicine for many years, Chen has witnessed the progress of China's obstetrics and gynecology. In 1949, China's maternal mortality ratio (MMR) was 1,500 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, and the figure has dropped to 16.1 in 2021.

Chen's career as a doctor began in Xinjiang after graduation from university. He worked in Xinjiang for nearly a decade and saw the profound changes taking place in Xinjiang, but he was also aware of the need to bridge the medical gap. Therefore, after returning to Guangzhou to establish a severe maternal rescue center, he and his team go to Xinjiang and Tibet every year to carry out medical skills training for local doctors.
