A chef from Nansha, Guangzhou to bring local cuisine to Brazil

As China and Brazil celebrate their 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, the China City Food Expo, supported by the State of Rio de Janeiro and Duque de Caxias city government along with other organizations, is set to tour across 45 cities in the State of Rio de Janeiro.

Since 2022, Nansha District in Guangzhou and the city of Duque de Caxias have been engaging in exchanges. Pastry Chef Ma Tujia from Guangzhou Nansha Garden Hotel is set to represent Nansha in Brazil, embarking on a three-month culinary and cultural exchange.

Ma Tujia expressed his skill in creating dishes with Nansha's local specialities—such as little tiger shrimp, red bananas, a touch of red sweet potatoes, and Xinken lotus roots—to craft Cantonese dim sum like shrimp dumplings, banana cakes, cheese sweet potato balls, and lotus root flaky pastry.

To make Cantonese cuisine popular in various cities, Ma Tujia says, "It is essential to adapt to local characteristics." He also looks forward to incorporating Brazilian culinary influences into Nansha's food scene, enriching it with innovative dishes inspired by his food exchange experiences in Brazil.

On August 1st, 2022, Nansha and the city of Duque de Caxias in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance friendly exchanges and cooperation. Both sides hope to strengthen cooperation in economy and trade, education, smart cities, free trade ports, and culture and tourism.

In 2023, representatives from Duque de Caxias visited Nansha. This visit by Chef Ma marks the first time Nansha District has sent a representative on a return visit to Duque de Caxias.
