The traditional Chinese lunar calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms. The Autumn Equinox is the 16th solar term of the year and also the 4th solar term in autumn. This day marks the sun's crossing above Earth’s equator and almost equal day and night.

Summer heat is receding, and crisp air comes with autumn. On the Autumn Equinox, the day and night are of equal length.

. The Autumn Equinox is the 16th solar term of the year and also the 4th solar term in autumn. This day marks the sun's crossing above Earth’s equator and almost equal day and night.

As a Chinese saying goes, “the temperature drops a bit after each autumn rain”. Temperatures drop more rapidly, and the difference in temperature between day and night is increasingly remarkable. The autumn weather is pleasant. The rainy season in most parts of China has just ended, followed by autumn days with a brisk wind and fresh weather.

The Autumn Equinox was the traditional festival for making sacrifices to the moon. The Mid-Autumn Festival we celebrate now originates from it. Before the Mid-Autumn Festival became a fixed day of celebration, people watched the moon, worshiped it, and made sacrifices to it on the day of the autumn equinox.

In South China, there is a Hakka custom of eating quicai (an autumn vegetable) on the Autumn Equinox. Quicai is a kind of wild amaranth. Hakka people make qiutang (autumn soup) with this vegetable and fish to wish their family members safety and good health.

Another custom of the Autumn Equinox is egg balancing. People around the world try to balance an egg on this day. For this, you'd better choose an egg with a smooth surface, which a hen laid 4 or 5 days ago. Put it on the table and balance it. This game is simple but interesting, and many people enjoy it.

It is time for health preservation. In the dry autumn, the combination of residual summer heat before the Autumn Equinox and cold weather after the Autumn Equinox could lead to too much heat in the human body. To prevent such discomfort, you should stick to exercising to keep healthy and focus on getting rid of the heat in your lungs. Mild and heat-relieving foods should be added to the daily diet, such as sesame and honey, which can nourish and replenish the human body’s essential fluid and remove heat from the lungs.
