Macron: France has long friendship with Guangdong

Guangzhou has a long and distinctive history, and also has a very special history of exchanges with France, said French President Emmanuel Macron during a speech at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou on April 7.

He noted the friendship between countries or regions should be based on the exchanges of knowledge and science. More than 300 years ago, the French sailing ship named "Amphitrite" set off from the port of La Rochelle and arrived in Guangzhou, and the people aboard were not soldiers nor merchants, but mathematicians, he said.

Macron furthered that through such exchanges, mutual understanding between different cultures is established, which thus strengthens the bond of friendship.

He said with people-to-people exchanges and communication resumed after three years of the COVID-19 pandemic, China and France are set to work together, in a bid to explore ways to build a better future for our peoples and the world.
