The city of Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong Province, signed a Letter of Intent for the Establishment of Friendly City Relations with Chiang Mai, Kingdom of Thailand on March 31.

Both sides will take advantage of the opportunities presented by the "Belt and Road Initiative" and collaborate in various areas such as education, academia, trade, investment, tourism, culture, agriculture, public health, and medical sectors. This cooperation aims to promote the economic and social development of both cities.
The province of Chiang Mai is located in northern Thailand, approximately 700 kilometers away from Bangkok. It spans an area of 20,100 square kilometers and has a population of around 1.65 million. Chiang Mai city is not only the second largest city in Thailand but also serves as a major hub for commerce, education, and tourism in the region.
Guangzhou and Chiang Mai have already established cooperative partnerships in investment, education, scientific research, and other fields. In August 2022, representatives from various departments of Chiang Mai, including the Chiang Mai Department of Commerce and the Chiang Mai Office of the Thai Tourism Bureau, participated in the RCEP and Guangzhou Development Round Table, a sub-session of the 8th China Guangzhou International Investment Forum.
Universities in Chiang Mai frequently engage with universities in Guangzhou. In 2022, Chiang Mai sent a congratulatory video to celebrate the "50th Anniversary of the Establishment of Thai Major" at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. Additionally, in 2023, a delegation from Chiang Mai visited Guangzhou University to explore collaboration opportunities in areas such as automotive design and Chinese language learning.
Guangzhou has already established friendly relations with 106 cities and provinces in 68 countries.
