Guangdong issues alerts for thunderstorms today, tips for residents

An outbreak of moderate thunderstorms tore through Guangdong from north to south starting last night until this early morning, and heavy rains barreled through parts of Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Zhongshan and other cities, according to the province’s meteorological observatory. As of 8:50 am, 14 cities in Guangdong have issued orange alerts for rainstorms, and 139 regions have issued yellow alerts.

At present, the thunderstorm clouds have moved out of Yuexiu and Tianhe districts of Guangzhou, and the rainstorm warning signals for the two districts have been lifted since 8:41 am on May 23. There will be overcast in Guangzhou today, with thundershowers and heavy rain in some parts.

The province will face another round of severe weather with high temperatures this week. Please stay tuned to the latest forecast.

Tips:

1. The roads are wet and slippery with puddles. Please plan your routes in advance and travel safely.

2. Students are advised to suspend their school time when the meteorological department issues orange alerts for rainstorms. Parents can inform the school and wait until the risk has been eliminated before sending their children to school.

3. Heavy rains are always accompanied by short-term gales. Please remove items near windows and balconies properly and beware of falling objects.

4. Pay attention to potential disasters such as landslides, mudslides, local mountain torrents, as well as flooding in urban and rural areas caused by heavy local downpours.

5. Remember to bring an umbrella and a pair of rain shoes in case of sudden rainfall.
