Wonderful minority sports I | Ingenious sports from ancient times

Editor’s notes: The 7th Guangdong Ethnic Minority Traditional Sporting Games is held in Ruyuan, Shaoguan, a northern city in Guangdong, from August 22 to 28. GDToday’s reporters have visited Ruyuan and explored traditional sports of ethnic minorities, unique national cultures, and the changes brought by rural revitalization there.

At the 7th Guangdong Ethnic Minority Traditional Sporting Games, there are some sports boasting a history of hundreds of thousands of years, such as Cuqiu, Yajia, and Pearl Ball.

Cuqiu is also known as football in ancient China. Since 1999, Cuqiu has become a competition game of the National Ethnic Minority Traditional Sporting Games. Cuqiu game involves two teams, who try to maneuver the ball of the other team out of the central circle in the field.

Spinning top is a traditional Chinese folk game popular all over the country. The spinning top also involves two teams. The rules are very complicated. But the basic idea is that the athletes need to spin their tops to kick the tops of the other team out of a certain area.
