Vietnam is set to build a railway connecting China's Yunnan Province with Ha Long City, with an estimated investment of 179 trillion VND.

The country's official media reported on Wednesday that the 427-kilometer railway starts on the border between China's Yunnan Province and Vietnam's mountainous northern province of Lao Cai, and extends to Ha Long City via the capital Hanoi and the port city of Haiphong.

The Vietnam Railways (VNR) has submitted the railway plan to the national Ministry of Transport for approval.

Construction of the railway is expected to begin in 2030, and by 2050, it will carry 8.3 million passengers and 17.5 million metric tons of freight per year. Vietnam has approached China to seek technology and funding to develop a railway linking the two countries.

China and Vietnam have relentlessly expressed their willingness to jointly strengthen railway connectivity. In addition to the above-mentioned Kunming-Haiphong railway in Yunnan, the two countries also plan to upgrade another railway from Guangxi to Hanoi, and possibly build a railway connecting Shenzhen and Haiphong.
