An intercity railway linking the downtown areas of Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Foshan, Dongguan, Zhuhai, and Jiangmen will start construction this year. By then, it will become a second scheme to travel from downtown Guangzhou and Shenzhen, after the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Intercity Railway.

This is one of the latest efforts that Guangzhou, together with Zhuhai, Foshan, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Jiangmen, and Zhaoqing, makes to accelerate the building of "Greater Bay Area on Rail".
Here are the updates on some other intercity railway projects:
1. West Ring Line of Guangzhou-Foshan Circular Intercity Railway
This new line is expected to start construction before the end of this year. From Foshan West Railway Station to Guangzhou North Railway Station, it has a total length of 47.01 km, including 30.5 km in Foshan and 16.51 km in Guangzhou.
2. Guangzhou Railway Station-Guangzhou South Railway Station Link
This rail link line will further connect Guangzhou Railway Station with Guangzhou-Hong Kong High-speed Railway and Guangzhou-Zhuhai Intercity Railway. Upon completion, it will greatly shorten the travel time from Hong Kong, Macao, Shenzhen, and Zhuhai to downtown Guangzhou and make it possible to take just one hour to commute between city centers of Guangzhou and Hong Kong.
3. Nansha-Zhuhai (Zhongshan) Intercity Railway
This new line will be connected with Metro Line 18 and Line 22 of Guangzhou, Guangzhou East Railway Station-Huadu Tiangui Intercity Railand Fangcun-Baiyun Airport Intercity Rail.
By then, passengers from Zhuhai, Zhongshan, and Nansha can travel directly to Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport.
4. Guangzhou-Foshan-Jiangmen-Zhuhai Intercity Railway
The construction of Guangzhou-Foshan-Jiangmen-Zhuhai Intercity Rail is planned to begin in 2023. With a total length of 162 km, it starts at Fangcun Station in Guangzhou and will terminate at Zhuhai Airport.
When completed, it will take only 30 minutes to travel from downtown Guangzhou to Jiangmen, and will make it possible to directly transfer to the Guangzhou subway and to the Guangzhou-Dongguan-Shenzhen Intercity Railway.

According to the Intercity Rail Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (2020 - 2030),Guangzhou will undertake a total of 13 regional metropolitan projects, including 8 intercity railways and 5 rail hubs, with a total mileage of about 660 km and investment of almost 378.3 billion RMB.
By 2025, the railway network in the Greater Bay Area will reach 4,700 km, and will reach 5,700 km to fully cover cities above the county level by 2035.
