OMG, air conditioners be hit by heatstroke?

As the scorching weather continues, the air conditioner has become a "life-saving" appliance for most people. But have you ever thought about that air conditioners can also be hit by heatstroke? In fact, there is a working temperature range for air conditioners, beyond which the protection mechanism will be triggered, leading to the shutdown of the machine.

How exactly do air conditioners get heatstroke?

Basically, the air conditioner works by vaporizing liquid refrigerant in the evaporator to absorb heat and lower the temperature. After the refrigerant is vaporized, the compressor and condenser (which are usually installed in the outdoor unit) start to pressurize and cool the gaseous refrigerant coming out of the evaporator. As the gas turns to liquid again, it re-enters into the evaporator. By now, a circulation is completed.

The liquefaction of refrigerant and the operation of the machine itself will generate heat. In this case, if the ambient temperature is too high and the heat dissipation becomes poor, the air conditioner will become overheated, which may result in device failure or even a fire.

Therefore, in case of such accidents, air conditioners are designed with an overheating protection mechanism. When the temperature is too high, it will automatically shut down as if being hit by heatstroke.

According to the 2019 national standard GB/T 7725 Room Air Conditioners, the vast majority of air conditioners in China take T1 operating conditions, suitable for ambient temperatures from -7℃to 43℃. In other words, when the outdoor ambient temperature exceeds 43℃, air conditioners will not be able to work properly.

In most areas of China, the maximum temperature in summer usually does not exceed 43℃. However, there are times when the air conditioner stops even if the temperature does not reach that high. This is due to the excessive heat production and unfavorable heat dissipation of the machine.

How to prevent air conditioners from getting heatstroke?

1. Proper installation

The wrong orientation, the long-term exposure to the sun and the lack of ventilation will increase the temperature of the outdoor unit, resulting in the shutdown of the compressor. Therefore, when installing the outdoor unit, it's recommended to choose a location with favorable ventilation and less sunlight, and leave enough space around it for heat dissipation.

2. Regular maintenance

Too much dust will block the condenser, which may also trigger the overheating protection mechanism. Therefore, the air conditioner needs to be cleaned and maintained regularly to keep it in good working condition.

3. Reasonable use

By setting the temperature between 26-30 ℃ in summer, it's possible to reduce the burden of air conditioners and to save electricity as well. In case that the overheating protection mechanism is on and the air conditioner doesn't work, we can turn it off for a while to let it have a rest. If possible, water can be sprayed on the outdoor unit to help cool it down.
