Chinese bayberries shine in Guangzhou, harvest festival opens for picking

As summer arrives in Guangzhou, the rolling hills of Liangkou Town in Conghua District come alive with vibrant yangmei (Chinese bayberry) groves.

Benefiting from the ecosystem of the Huanglongdai Water Reserve, four villages—Lianqun, Shengtang, Meishu, and Lianping—have nurtured yangmei orchards. These groves yield premium varieties like Hongmei (Red Plum), Heizhenzhu (Black Pearl), and Dongkui (Eastern Supreme), whose sweet-tart balance has earned "Huanglongdai Bayberries" the title of the region's gastronomic emblem.

The region boasts nearly 2,000 mu (133.33 hectares) of orchards with an annual production of 200,000 jin (100,000 kg).

Currently, it is the peak season for the yangmei harvest. This year's Yangmei Festival will run from May 15 to mid-June. Residents are encouraged to visit Lianqun, Shengtang, Meishu, and Lianping villages to pick yangmei and experience the joy of harvesting.
