Renovated by the team of He Jingtang, an academic with the Chinese Academy of Engineering, it is the largest-scale railway-themed museum in Southern China, covering an area of nearly 30,000 square meters. Here are some highlights of the Guangzhou Railway Museum.

◆ 30,000-square-meter exhibition areas

The museum consists of two indoor exhibition areas and an outdoor one, covering an area of 10,461 square meters and 18,489 square meters respectively.

Two indoor exhibition areas are the original repositories of the railway station. One is made up of five exhibition halls, responsible for displaying the century-old history of Guangzhou's railway development, and the other exhibits the heritage and items in the field of the railway industry. In open air, the showpieces include a series of railway-related devices such as carriages and rail tracks.

◆ A collection of nearly 4,000 relics

The indoor exhibition areas integrate the functions of display, collection, exhibition, popularization of scientific knowledge and education. They are home to nearly 4,000 pieces of relics, with 1,390 of them being on display to the public. The showpieces include the boundary monuments set along the rail tracks, stocks issued at that time, century-old steel sleepers, the steel rails as well as models of 11 types of trains.

The open-air exhibition area shows steam-driven railways, the chair cars of YZ22-typed green train, railway crossings and a display wall covered by the train direction plates.

◆ Site of a century-old railway station

Located on the bank of Pearl River in Guangzhou, the museum was built on the site of the century-old Huangsha Station, maintaining the basic appearances of the buildings of the Huangsha Station, which was put into use in 1907.

You can access to the museum by making a reservation through the official WeChat account named “广州铁路 (pinyin: guang zhou tie lu) or through WeChat Mini Program named “广铁U彩 (pinyin: guang tie u cai)” as of May 19. Group visiting of over ten people should reserve at least 24 hours ahead of time.

Opening hours: 9:00-17:00 (except for Mondays and no entry after 16:00)
