The GBA International Cooperation Center for Underwater Archaeology was recently opened at the Nansha Scientific Research Base of the Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey.

With abundant underwater cultural heritage resources, Guangdong is an important platform for underwater archaeology in China. It was also the first to announce the establishment of two provincial-level underwater cultural relics protection areas and has been at the forefront of the country in terms of the overall salvage project, underwater excavation and preservation, and underwater scientific archaeological technology.

Under the guidance of China's National Cultural Heritage Administration, the GBA International Cooperation Center for Underwater Archaeology will cooperate with the National Center for Archaeology, while enhancing communication with relevant scientific research institutions, higher education institutions, and cultural institutions in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, so as to promote innovative projects such as underwater archaeological excavation, key technological research and development in archaeology, improvement of archaeological technology and equipment, protection and restoration of underwater cultural relics, talent team construction, and international cooperation and exchange in underwater archaeology.

In the near future, this new center will conduct a comprehensive province-wide underwater archaeological investigation to help facilitate the fourth national cultural relic survey, establish a geographic information management system for the underwater cultural heritage of the GBA, collaborate with relevant organizations to explore deep-sea archaeology, deepen academic research cooperation while exploring international cooperation in underwater archaeology in Southeast Asia.
